Advocating for New York’s Professional Opticians
NYSSO is New York’s only statewide organization dedicated to the interests and needs of licensed opticians. We advocate for our members in two key ways:
Public Awareness:
Members of the public may not be aware that New York requires opticians to be licensed to promote safe and accurate dispensing practices. NYSSO provides ongoing outreach to the public to educate them about the importance of having a licensed optician. NYSSO also provides members with information and materials to help them communicate with their patients about the importance of having a licensed optician.
Government Affairs:
NYSSO works closely with government relations professionals to monitor legislation in the State Legislature and regulations with the State Department of Education.
NYSSO Issues Statement on Formulary Changes
NYSSO supports a patient's right to choose eyeglass lenses under the guidance of a licensed optician. According to the State Education Department, an ophthalmic dispenser assists consumers with "determining what lenses will best fit a prescription and suit the customer's visual needs and lifestyle."
